The Mechanical Designer is responsible for the design and support of new and existing products. This role will leverage the principles and cultural commitments of Sonny’s Enterprise Excellence to build buy-in, conduct productive inquiry with and in support of our production team members, and engage in daily continuous improvement activities to support them.

 

Responsibilities

  • Take the lead in the product design and development of mechanical systems and components.
  • Participate in and support Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) activities; identify potential design-related failures and risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Build product prototypes and oversee structural and thermal testing and analysis of designs to validate functionality and ensure product performance.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of Design of Experiments (DOE) to optimize product design and testing.
  • Analyze testing results and provide input for design modifications based on DFMEA and DOE outcomes.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and automation teams to streamline production and integrate Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Automation (DFA) principles into the design process.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and troubleshooting efforts in alignment with APQP guidelines.
  • Utilize advanced computer-aided design (CAD) software to create 3D models and engineering drawings.
  • Review and maintain engineering documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
  • Assist in the development of product manuals and technical reports.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, industry standards, and quality requirements in design work.
  • Stay informed about industry best practices, emerging technologies, and innovative engineering trends.
  • Collaborate with and mentor junior engineers, providing guidance for design projects and fostering a culture of excellence within the team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, research and development, and automation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with technical certifications, apprenticeship, or vocational training in engineering-related fields.
  • Must have 6-8 years of experience in Mechanical Design.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects.
  • Proficiency in advanced CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Auto CAD).
  • Strong problem solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering principals and methodologies, including DFMEA, APGP, DOE, DFM, and DFA.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, MS Outlook and Internet Explorer.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • The ability to work effectively and productively with others. Shares responsibility with team members for successes and failures.
  • Practices safe work habits and encourages others to do the same. Identifies ways to improve the safety of the work environment. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures to promote effective safety operations.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, MS Outlook and Internet Explorer. Email automation, and online analytics tools required.

The pay for this position is dependent upon experience, between $69,646.50 and $85,008.00.
